Sebastian Jaña - Theatre Director

Sebastián Jaña (Santiago, 1981) began his career as theatre director in 2004 with his own production (GEN, based on Jean Genet’s life). He is a graduate student from the acting programm (PUC, Chile), but he started to work mainly as theater director. He has studies in theatre direction in The Scenic Investigation Center La Memoria. He began his career mixing his interests in acting and direction, teaching theatre in many arts majors in Chile.

Since the very beginning, his artistic works are being based on a research about violence. This research turned into an obsession in Jaña’s plays after the day which change the conception of contemporary world: the day of the attack to the Twin Towers in New York, 9-11. His plays emphasize staging: the intensity of  the image, lights and sounds that make his staging style unique, raw, shocking and very particular.

In association with the chilean playwright Luis Barrales, he has developed a serie of theatre plays starting from some of the big classics of theatre: Jardín de Reos (Prisioner’s Garden), from the Jean Genet’s Haute Surveillance; Topografía de las Lágrimas (Tears Topography), from the play Les Bonnes, also written by Genet; and Matar a Rómulo (Killing Romulus) based on Shakespere’s Titus Andronicus.
